Below: The legendary Tommy Allsup performing with Johnny Rogers. Tommy was Buddy Holly's guitarist in 1958-59, and performed with Holly at the famous Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa on Feb. 2nd 1959. It would be Buddy's final performance. Holly, along with The Big Bopper and Richie Valens were killed later that night when their small plane crashed. Allsup. scheduled to fly with Holly, eventually agreed to a coin toss with Valens to see who would ride on the plane with Buddy.
Richie won the flip, and Allsup wound up on the tour bus instead.
In the years that followed, Allsup played with Bob Wills' Texas Playboys, produced many albums, performed on over 9,000 studio recording sessions, and eventually won a Grammy award. He also says Johnny Rogers does the best tribute to Buddy he's ever seen and calls him "the best showman I've ever performed with".
